2Monday nights has gotten rough for the old TV watcher as there are 5 things on I normally watch. Here’s what I do:

1. Watch Prison Break live in HD,
2. Watch 24 live in low-def while I tape Heroes in HD,
3. Watch recorded Heroes in HD while I tape Studio 60 in HD and CSI-Miami in low-def,3 4|
As I have said before, I respect the office of the Presidency, but it is getting more and more difficult for me to respect the current administration occupying the White House. Why should I respect the White House if they do not even respect a former President? I think comments like that are a reflection of our current president, whether the words came from him directly, or through a spokesperson. And it is an ugly reflection.
4. Watch recorded Studio 60 in HD.
5. Watch CSI-Miami sometime later.

Whew! Why do I watch all these shows? Because they’re great? Here’s the recaps. Don’t read these if you’re spoiler-averse, but I’ve put the real spoilers in Inviso-text…

Organization/Program
Youth Education Alliance (YEA)

Description of program
YEA produces media aimed at educating students on education and organizing in the district.

Recent accomplishments
2004-05 - YEA produces a quarterly zine written and organized by their youth members. They have put out five issues over the past year and a half.

2003-04 – Produced a video,“Stand up” which talks about the history of student organizing in DCPS and highlighted current conditions of schools in the District.

2001 - Produced a spoken word and hip hop CD

*Shopping
It is not possible to buy a week’s worth of groceries under one roof. For example, I wanted to make a simple chopped salad and had to go to four different places in order to get all of the ingredients…ShopRite for lettuce, garlic & olive oil; Quality Cuts for salami & cheese; Uchumi for bread (for croutons); and Nakasero Market for vegetables. It has been startling to me that sometimes when a supermarket here runs out of something (say white sugar) the shelves stand empty until another shipment comes in. I don’t think I’ve ever seen empty shelves in the supermarket before. The bright side? At least if an item is sold out I can find it somewhere else. And all told, I can find nearly anything here.
Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip is on hiatus. NBC is showing new episodes of The Black Donnellys in its place. A full season of Studio 60 was ordered by NBC, but the Cincinnati Post is reporting that the show has been canceled. Alan Sorkin defends his show in another recent article about work behind the scenes on Studio 60.

Super light and moisturizing, it glides on your lips…no stickiness, no tackiness. It also has SPF 12!! Packaged in this cute little pot, this is perfect for those hot days of summer. If you love lip balm like me for everyday wear - snap these up (they are only $14.50 so get two!). Comes in 9 shades…my favorites are Deep Sigh, Tender Baby and Shush.

I will have a more in-depth review of the newest MAC collections later in this week.
American Idol review is coming.

Lost review is coming.
*Pace
I once tried to make myself walk at the same lullaby pace that is frequently walked here…I was not capable of doing it. If you’ve ever been in a wedding and been asked to walk s-l-o-w-l-y down the long center aisle you can begin to understand what I’m talking about. Now imagine that the person keeping that pace is your waitress bringing you the cold water you ordered on a sweltering day and you’ll understand why it makes me crazy. That slow walking pace is just one example of the slow lifestyle here. The bright side? Everyone understands if you’re late.

H5

So, back to June of 2003…Dwaine applied for a job that he really, really hoped to get. In December 2003 he interviewed for and was hired by USAID, pending his “Top Secret Security Clearance” approval. We were sure we would be moving to Washington D.C. within a matter of months. We found out that the word “pending” is a tough one to get over. We waited and waited for that security clearance (due to a backlog of clearances for Iraq and Afghanistan; not because he was kicked out of 8th grade!). We were in a waiting stage for about 9 months. By September of 2004, we knew we could not continue to wait forever for the clearance… it was time to look for a job elsewhere. Thus, Dwaine accepted the position which brought us here to Kampala, Uganda. This is interesting, mostly because of the uncertain source of infection. Fujian is one of the “hotspots” in China, with H5 cases going back for years. And, there are many possible ways to be exposed to a vector.

This incident should help to remind us that the spread of H5 is a major global problem, even though we have a avoided a human pandemic. So far.

How Cute Is This?? - Mom Spit No Rinse Cleaner…

MomspitI know what you are thinking…. “Ewwww Lianne!” no but seriously isn’t this the BEST idea?? Now, I haven’t tried this yet but I know how useful this could be. I am guilty of doing the momspit thing to my son (as my mother did to me) when I was little I was mortified, but I ended up doing it to my own so go figure.

Then out of the blue, there it was. The e-mail message we had longed for for such a long time. “Congratulations. We are pleased to advise that you have completed all of the necessary clearances to enter on duty May 16, 2005.” Notification that Dwaine was expected to report for work in D.C. We laughed out loud when we read it. Of course we wouldn’t take the job now. We were already here. We had made our choice…hadn’t we?

For the first time in our married life we were at the proverbial fork in the road. Before us lay two paths of seemingly equal value. Which way should we go? Do we stay in Kampala for the duration of Dwaine’s current project or leave earlier than expected? We talked, we prayed, we consulted those we hold in the highest respect. We decided to take the job.
